Trump Brings Politics Into Diddy Pardon Discussion
Donald Trump has returned to the spotlight for his latest involvement in the ongoing legal battle of hip-hop artist Sean “Diddy” Combs. While speaking on the Newsmax show Finnerty on Friday, August 1, the former president was asked about his thoughts on issuing a presidential pardon for the Bad Boy Records founder in the wake of last month’s controversial conviction.
In July, Combs was found guilty on a single federal offense: transportation with intent to commit prostitution. However, he was cleared on several more serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. The trial began in early June and lasted more than seven weeks with a host of testimonies, including singer Cassie Ventura, who claimed the former record executive abused her and was involved in trafficking her during their past relationship. Combs has denied all of these allegations and has maintained his innocence.
When Finnerty inquired as to a potential pardon, Trump’s answer was rather telling as he revealed he had given the situation some consideration. “Well, he was essentially, I guess, sort of half-innocent,” he said. “He’s still in jail or something, but he was celebrating a victory. But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory.”
Trump’s comments on the case also reflected on his past relationship with Combs, which was cordial up until the rapper reportedly became “sour” when he began to enter politics.
“We were very friendly. I got along with him great,” he added. “He used to like me a lot. I think when I ran for politics, that relationship busted up. … I would certainly look at the facts. If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”
Past Remarks from Trump About Sean Combs Pardon
Trump had previously weighed in on the rapper’s case in May in an Oval Office press briefing. During the session, the former president was questioned by Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy on the possibility of offering clemency to Combs.
Trump’s response back in May was very similar to that of his most recent Newsmax remarks. He stated that at the time he would have to “look at the facts” before making any decision, but that he wouldn’t take into consideration the rapper’s feelings towards him.
“I haven’t spoken to him in years,” Trump told Doocy. “But if I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me. It wouldn’t matter.”
At the time of this writing, Combs’ legal situation is still ongoing. The rapper was ultimately convicted on the lone charge last month in what has been an 11-month saga against the now-record executive. The charges and case against Combs were brought on by an extensive federal investigation. While he was acquitted of the most serious offenses, he still faces up to 20 years behind bars for the single federal offense.
Sentencing in the case is currently set for October 3. The developments in the legal battle have continued to stoke discussions on the subjects of celebrity justice, presidential influence, and how personal relationships can impact the president’s clemency decisions. Trump’s recent public comments on the issue add another layer of intrigue and speculation to the story. Even though the two no longer seem to share the same bond they did years ago, Trump has at least continued to show a sense of willingness to examine the case.
“He was celebrating a victory,” Trump said on Newsmax. “But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory.”
A video clip of Trump’s full remarks to Finnerty during his recent segment has since been shared on X (formerly Twitter), garnering reactions from political pundits, hip-hop listeners, and legal analysts.
As for now, there will be more to come in October, as Combs prepares to face his sentencing for the case. Until then, speculation about the possible presidential pardon from Trump may very well continue to loom.
