Strange New Worlds Season 3 Continues Gorn Conflict

Premiering on Thursday, July 17, 2025, the upcoming third season of Paramount+’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has just received its first official trailer, marking the first major preview of the season since the release of a teaser trailer back in April.

The end of Season 2 found the Enterprise amid a brutal attack by the Gorn, who had infiltrated a Federation colony world in space and set their sights on the ship as it was trapped and isolated there. After the brutal attack, a number of the crew, as well as other survivors on the planet, are taken as hostages by the Gorn, and in the finale, Pike (Anson Mount) is forced to decide on either ordering his crew to retreat as Starfleet demands or fight to try and rescue those who were captured. As you can probably guess, Pike chooses the latter, a continuation of which we see in the opening of the first preview shown last October during the New York City Comic-Con.

As the preview showed, the third season will start off by picking up almost immediately from where the second season finale left off. It starts with a standard high-octane space battle, which the show has so far excelled at, this time against the Gorn, who the crew are trying to protect several Federation citizens and surviving crew from before being rescued by reinforcements, including Starfleet Admiral Nero (Andrew Koji), who orders a tactical nuke to be used against them, which is right where the preview cuts off. The trailer that premiered today, however, promises to end the war with the Gorn and introduce the crew to a brand-new villain, who will bring them to their absolute limits and test their sense of duty, their loyalty, and their courage.

Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will continue with Pike still in command of the Enterprise, and while the war with the Gorn is likely to be over and done with by the end of the season, there will be a brand-new villain who will not hold back when it comes to testing them. In addition, not all of the stories will be serialized adventures that take the crew to new worlds and places; there will also be “faith-based” episodes, as well as more romance, comedy, and even mystery.

Paramount+ has also promised to see some genre-hopping in Strange New Worlds season 3 that’s different from what we’ve seen from previous Star Trek shows. This is, of course, in addition to the usual episodic adventures the crew will find themselves going on.

It’s not all new faces on board the Enterprise, as all of the main and recurring cast members are returning to reprise their roles for Season 3 and some additional new faces will join the cast as well, including a return to the past by Cillian O’Sullivan, who will be playing Dr. Roger Korby, a character from Star Trek: The Original Series played by Michael Strong. In the Strange New Worlds timeline, Korby is a medical archaeology expert and noted archaeologist, as well as Chapel’s (Jess Bush) long-missing fiancé, who has been gone for a long time before his sudden return. He will likely complicate his romance with Chapel, who has moved on by finding a relationship with Spock (Ethan Peck).

The season also brings on some new guest stars, both familiar faces in the comedy world, Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt. If the April teaser was any indication, it seems that the series will be experimenting with different genres for each episode, including not only action-adventure but also other, more comedy-focused side stories. The new trailer appears to bear that out, with a look at the crew bonding, including some lighter romantic subplots involving Spock and Chapel, and a hilariously bad result of a science experiment.

The preview also features a moment where James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) takes the captain’s chair for a little while; whether this is for a full episode or as part of another serialized story is not entirely clear, but it’s clear that he’s learning to be a captain. When he first steps into the captain’s chair, Pike (Anson Mount) gives him some words of wisdom and a glimpse into what it takes to be a Starfleet captain, saying, “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.”

The preview ends with a first look at Oswalt’s Vulcan, who, to our surprise, is part of one of the rare comedy beats on the show. After first successfully high-fiving Spock, he asks him to “go down low,” to which Spock complies before doing the now-iconic “too slow” line when the Vulcan character doesn’t time it properly. “Why would you do that?” the Vulcan asks, to which Spock replies, “Because you are too slow.”

Season 3 Premiere Date and Release Schedule

Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will premiere on Paramount+ on Thursday, July 17, 2025. After that, new episodes of Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be released every Thursday until the final episode on September 11, 2025.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has already been renewed for a fourth season and will continue to return to the episodic format of previous Trek series, but unlike the traditional space adventure series, Strange New Worlds has already had crossover crossovers with other Star Trek series like Discovery.
