Hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg is facing backlash from progressives after he ranted on a podcast about LGBTQ+ inclusion in the recent Pixar film Lightyear. When taking his grandson to see the family-friendly movie, he reportedly was shocked by a scene in the movie and did not know how to explain the inclusion of a same-sex couple to his grandson.
Snoop Dogg was a guest on Sarah Fontenot’s It’s Giving podcast last week and shared the story about how he lost track of how his grandson was asking him questions about the characters in the movie, including two women who are in a relationship and share a kiss.
The rapper’s comments were spread widely over social media as he is set to perform at the Australian Football League’s Grand Final in November. AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan refused to comment on whether or not Snoop Dogg’s performance is still on and said it was a “matter for our people over there,” per PinkNews.
Lightyear is a spinoff film of Pixar’s famous Toy Story franchise. The film, which stars Chris Evans as Buzz Lightyear, is a space-age science-fiction flick that centers on the “real” Buzz Lightyear, the character that the movie industry in the Toy Story universe created the Buzz Lightyear toy for.
The film took a right turn when it decided to include one character in a same-sex relationship, who is a woman. The film, which was rated PG in the U.S., shows them sharing a kiss during the movie. The relationship was not a major plot point, but when the scene was first added to the film, conservative audiences jumped on the inclusion, leading Disney to remove the kiss from the film entirely.
Disney would later restore the scene after criticism from inside the company and outside LGBTQ+ advocacy groups. Chris Evans, who voices Buzz Lightyear in the film, was unapologetic about the decision at the time.
The real truth is that those people are idiots. There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward, and embrace the growth that makes us human.
The film was set to be a big money-maker, but underperformed and failed to match critics’ expectations that a Pixar film with a major star attached to it would perform much better in terms of box office revenue. Reviews of the film were mixed, but it earned just over $226 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

Reaction to Snoop Dogg’s Comments
Reaction to Snoop Dogg’s comments, many of which were shared in the tweet embedded above, was swift, with the progressive audience on social media attacking Snoop for making the choice to take his grandson to the film and now expressing surprise about what he saw. It has become clear that he is still planning to perform at the AFL Grand Final despite the blowback, as Disney has not pulled his contract as a performer either.
In an interview with Reuters Television at the time of the film’s release, Chris Evans was unapologetic about the decision to include the same-sex relationship, and even as he cut short his scene.
“I think Disney and Pixar should be applauded for not censoring themselves on a really important moment in the film,” Evans said. “The only answer I can give people is that they’re idiots, and that’s an idea that no one has a choice but to accept.”
