Android 16 introduces significant behind-the-scenes modifications to benefit developers. One key improvement is automatic large-screen support. Android 16 applications (API level 36) now automatically adapt scaling to enhance display on foldables and tablets. Developers who create apps for Android 16 will achieve better-looking apps on large displays if they design with these devices in consideration.

The system includes baked-in camera enhancements. The Android 16 platform includes advanced camera functions including hybrid auto-exposure control, motion photo capture capabilities and enhanced night mode detection. Pixel phones exclusively support these features which need Android 16 to operate.

The launch of Android 16 features will occur in stages rather than all at once today. Google intends to release its most anticipated updates in 2025.

Take Material 3 Expressive, for instance. The redesigned design language which Google revealed last month will be available later this year. Google hasn’t defined a precise schedule yet but developers should start preparing their apps immediately. The new interface design will deliver an Android system with enhanced colorfulness and expressiveness.

Android introduces its highly anticipated desktop mode feature today. The new desktop mode represents a joint venture between Google and Samsung that builds upon Samsung’s existing DeX system.
