ARTSPARK Prepares for Grand Reopening After Renovation Delays
The ARTSPARK in Indianapolis is nearing its highly anticipated grand reopening after facing setbacks from flooding and a lengthy renovation project. Originally scheduled to open in August, historic floods left nearly the entire park grounds underwater, delaying the completion of renovations by two months. Now, ARTSPARK is ready to welcome visitors with new additions and refreshed exhibits.
Seven New Sculptures Installed at ARTSPARK
On Friday, ARTSPARK installed seven new sculptures, enhancing its already significant collection of public art. Among the new installations is "Fallen Soldiers," a 12-foot tall, 3,000-pound sculpture by Allison Baker, a professor at the Herron School of Art + Design. The piece was transported from South Bend on a flatbed truck and required a crane for its precise positioning—a process that took nearly four hours to complete. Baker noted the emotional and communal aspect of installing such a large work, saying, "It’s just really exciting to have them here and to see them in their permanent home. It’s always a magical moment of watching it come together and how many people that it takes."
Honoring Dora Natella and Expanding the Collection
Five of the newly installed works are by renowned sculptor Dora Natella, who passed away in 2023 following a car crash and battle with cancer. Her son, Andrea Natella, was present for the installation. These additions join the park’s existing collection, bringing the total number of sculptures to 28 when ARTSPARK officially reopens. The enduring impact of Dora Natella’s artistry will be experienced by all who visit the park as part of its revitalized public art display.
ARTSPARK’s Role in the Broad Ripple Art Community
Located in the vibrant Broad Ripple area, ARTSPARK has positioned itself as a significant contributor to the local art scene. “Broad Ripple is a thriving art community and we are so thankful to be part of it and to be here. And the way we contribute to that is by opening our park to the community,” explained Shannon Bennett, vice president of Events and Exhibitions at the Center. The park’s efforts to recover from the flood and complete its renovation demonstrate its commitment to providing public art and cultural experiences to the community.
Grand Reopening Set for Fall Fest
The official reopening of ARTSPARK will now occur during its annual Fall Fest celebration on October 17. The festival is free and open to the public, marking the culmination of a two-year, multi-million-dollar renovation project. Staff and volunteers have worked tirelessly to restore the grounds and prepare for the influx of visitors who will enjoy new art installations and festivities at Fall Fest. “It was a little devastating, but we’ve recovered really well and now it’s just absolutely beautiful,” said Bennett, reflecting on the challenges overcome to reach this milestone.
Artists and Park Teams Celebrate the Installation Process
For artists like Allison Baker, seeing their sculptures installed at ARTSPARK is a rewarding experience. "The best part is beginning a sculpture and you have absolutely nothing and you’re building it from the ground up and this is the all guts and glory day," said Baker. As ARTSPARK prepares to welcome the public once again, both artists and the broader art community look forward to celebrating creativity and resilience at the park’s renewed spaces.
